Hi. My name is Jules. I’m a wordsmith: I craft words.

I’m a reporter, writer, essayist, editor, and linguist. I approach journalism as a public service. Everyone deserves free, reliable access to information about the world around them, so they can make their own informed decisions. It’s my job to get them that information.

I cover technology and politics on a national level. I’ve previously written for WIRED, 404 Media, and VICE News. I also cover local news for some of the cities I call or have called home. For The Boston Guardian, in Boston, MA, I cover and investigate city politics and community events; for Matter News, in Columbus, OH, I write the monthly Local Politics column and conduct long-form investigations into city government.

As an editor, I like working with the intricacies of language. I focus on the sound of prose just as much as the content. I read everything I write or edit aloud; if I’m editing your work, I will make you read it to me.

Academically, I’m a linguist. I’ve studied the syntactic and phonetic systems of English, Bulgarian, and Khmer (Cambodian); the interaction of Middle Welsh and Latin; and the state of Spanish-English bilingualism in the upper west of Manhattan, New York. I wrote a senior honors thesis on Bulgarian phonetics for my studies at New York University [read this here], and presented a project on Bulgarian question syntax at Formal Approaches to Slavic Linguistics 33 [read a draft of this paper here].

Politically, I’m an independent. I care about protecting the working class and taking down abusive systems of corporate or governmental power. My mother was an immigrant from post-Soviet/Communist Bulgaria, and her life experiences there have greatly influenced how I view my government. This perspective may color the types of stories I pursue. After all, journalism by humans can never be truly objective, because humans are not objective. That’s why I will always use the most rigorous fact-checking and evidence standards possible when reporting. I might have my own opinions, but my primary obligation is to find the truth—and make sure it gets to you.

Personally, I love language and the U.S. National Parks. I care a lot about nature and conservation. If I wasn’t a writer, I would be a marine biologist or a primatologist. I have studied countless languages—literally, I have lost count of how many languages I have studied. I can fluently speak English and Bulgarian, read and report in Russian and French, and translate Latin and Ancient Greek. I’m currently working on Japanese.
